… when we’re not coding and consulting, we make time to dig
in to other rewarding endeavors. Here’s what else we’re up to in tech and the community:
Connecting in Local Tech
The local tech scene is booming, and we are pleased to support and sponsor organizations that encourage collaboration and growth. This year, we’re partners in relaunching a MongoDB Meetup group. In addition, we support and sponsor Data Works MD, the Central Maryland chapter of AFCEA, and Next Century’s Women in Computing events.
You’ll frequently find us on the golf course, on the event t-shirt, and in the dining room at industry fundraisers — we support our colleagues in tech and the worthy causes they’re lifting up.
Podcasting At Scale
In this “golden age” of podcasting, we’re honored to sponsor and participate in Senior Software Engineer, Mike Keith’s tech discussions on the At Scale Podcast. Launched in 2018, the show features informative conversations about engineering topics with people experienced in implementing and using software solutions around popular products and architectures.
Collaborating with the UMD iSchool
We’re working with students at the University of Maryland’s iSchool in College Park. A the beginning of the academic year, we outlined a specific business challenge for them. To address it, they will use their information management skills to develop a Capstone project that provides possible solutions. As a small business, we see this partnership as an opportunity to gain creative outside input. In addition to the Capstone initiative, our management team is conducting mock job interviews with
Advancing our Skills — Conferences & Training
We are committed to keeping our skills current and ready for the future needs of our clients. That’s one reason why our engineers attend or present at tech conferences every year. We’ve recently gained from our time at Elasticon, the Mid Atlantic Developers Conference, OSCON, Mongo in Midtown, NFJS, and CodeMash (where we presented this year). All of our full-time employees receive a training allowance so that they may take relevant courses or purchase educational materials to advance their skills.
Always Innovating (i2)
Our “ideas and innovations” program (i2) aims to support exploration and invention by providing resources, time, and team participation for concepts that could become realities. Our employees are encouraged to present an idea, receive feedback, work on a white paper, build a prototype and see solutions in action. Here’s one example of an i2 project we presented in 2019.
Giving and Volunteering
It’s important to us that we make a difference in the world around us. This winter, we donated funds to a local Backpack Buddies program that provides sustaining food items to local children in need.
Last year, we participated in a range of charitable golf outings, supported AFCEA Central Maryland’s scholarship fundraising, and sponsored Severna Park High School sports and its celebrated Rock ‘n’ Roll Revival, as well as a ski race with Seven Springs’ ski racing team — WPRC. TJ served on the selection committee for AFCEA’s Central Maryland STEM Kickstarter grant program.
We also donated to a number of nonprofits through our Charitable Matching Program. These included: the Anne Arundel County Literacy Council, Arnold Elementary School Parent-Teacher Organization, Free State Roller Derby, the Maryland Food Bank, the SPCA, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, and Toys for Tots.
