When we took a moment to look back at all that we accomplished in 2019, we might have been a little surprised and very proud. We’ve had a productive year.

Many thanks to our team for all they did to make 2019 such a success. Here’s a brief recap.

Strategic growth

Clarity grew its technical workforce by 25% this year. Database, Software, Systems, and User Experience Engineers joined our team. During the third quarter, we named a Director of Cloud Services and a Director of Innovation. Both are inaugural roles filled by current employees — Mike Keith and Ryan Hendrickson respectively. The new positions are designed to prepare us for sustained growth and the complex technical needs of our clients. In October, we welcomed our first Contract Manager, Tonya Artis-Johnson, to handle contract management and administration.

Involvement in the local tech community

We were active in meetups, and Clarity sponsored local tech groups like Data Works MD. This year, we helped relaunch Baltimore’s MUG (MongoDB Users Group).

Talking about technology

Our team gave a NiFi presentation and demonstration at January’s CodeMash conference. The endeavor, put together by collaborators Ryan Hendrickson, Elli Schwarz, and Bill Farmer, emerged from our ideas and innovations program (i2).

Our “ideas and innovations” program (i2) aims to support innovation and invention by providing resources, time, and team participation for concepts that could become realities. Employees are encouraged to present an idea, receive feedback, work on a white paper, build a prototype, and see solutions in action.

The CodeMash session was designed to walk attendees through the NiFi basics by showing how to move data across servers and networks using the platform. It covered how to manipulate, enrich, and stream data through custom enrichment processors and in doing so revealed the features and benefits of NiFi. To showcase NiFi’s capabilities and ease-of-use, our team ran some relatable demos.

Later that month, the CodeMash group gave a special NiFi presentation and demo for our team at the Clarity Loft.

They used NiFi to consume tweets that were filtered on #CodeMash to light-up LED lights that were illuminated thanks to a Raspberry Pi that was equipped with MiNiFi.

Embracing learning at conferences and training events

We are committed to keeping our skills current and ready for the future needs of our clients. That’s one reason why our engineers attend or present at tech conferences every year. All of our full-time employees receive a training allowance so that they may take relevant courses or purchase educational materials to advance their skills.

This year, a number of our engineers participated in a “Spring” training event that we sponsored at the UMBC Training Centers. It’s become a recent tradition for us to attend the local NFJS conference in Reston, Virginia, and we checked out MongoDB World in NYC over the summer.

Partnering with UMD’s iSchool

In 2018 and 2019, we worked with students at the University of Maryland’s iSchool in College Park. At the beginning of the academic year, we outlined a specific business challenge for them. To address it, students used their information management skills to develop a Capstone Project that provided possible solutions. As a small business, the partnership was an opportunity to gain creative outside input. In addition to the Capstone initiative, our management team conducted mock job interviews with iSchool students. More iSchool collaboration to come in 2020.
